About Convento de São Bernardino
The Convent of Saint Bernardino of Siena, more commonly known as the Convent of Saint Bernardino, is located in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Portugal. The Convent began as an oratory, originally with only three friars, but with the increase in the number of friars, it was decided to build a convent on land that had been donated to them. The Convent was founded in 1459. Due to its proximity to a stream, the Convent was struck by a flood that significantly damaged it, leading to its subsequent reconstruction, which brought some improvements to the conditions and organization of the convent, elevating it to the level of a true monastic house.
