The Civic and Cultural Center of Santa Clara - Universe of Memories of João Carlos Nunes Abreu was created to house the collection donated by João Carlos Nunes Abreu — journalist, writer, manager, hotel director, and former Regional Secretary of Tourism and Culture — to the Autonomous Region of Madeira. It is located in a house from the last quarter of the 19th century, on Calçada do Pico, in Funchal, which was acquired by the Regional Government in 2001. The house was built by Francisco Simão, the illegitimate son of the father of the Countess of Calçada. It is near the Convent of Santa Clara and the Quinta das Cruzes Museum. The mansion includes a library, an auditorium, and a tea house.
