Currency
Euro (EUR). Cards accepted almost everywhere; keep small cash for mountain cafes and fruit stalls.
Plugs
Type F (Schuko), 230V, the standard European two-pin. UK and US visitors need an adapter.
Driving
On the right. Expect tunnels, steep grades and hairpins off the VR1 expressway; hire cars with some power help.
Tap water
Excellent, straight from the mountains. The levadas you hike along built this system.
Emergency
112 works island-wide for police, ambulance and fire.
Language
Portuguese. English is spoken practically everywhere tourists go.
Tipping
Not obligatory. Rounding up or 5 to 10 percent for good service is appreciated.
SIM / eSIM
EU roaming applies for EU SIMs. Local prepaid and eSIMs are cheap and easy.
Getting around
No trains; Funchal has good urban buses and interurban coaches reach most towns, but a rental car unlocks the trailheads.
Porto Santo
Daily ferry from Funchal, about 2h15, or a 25-minute hop by plane.
Timezone
Western European Time, UTC+0 (UTC+1 in summer), same as Lisbon and London.
Next public holiday
Republic Day (5 Oct) - all holidays. Shops and banks close; Madeira adds its own regional days on 1 July and 26 December.

If something goes wrong

In any emergency call 112, island-wide, English spoken. EU visitors can use public emergency care with an EHIC card. Pharmacies run an official night and holiday duty rotation; any pharmacy window lists the on-duty one nearby. On your phone, the Near Me page shows your closest hospital and pharmacy.

Figures are south-coast long-term averages, rounded. The mountains run roughly 8 to 12 degrees cooler with their own weather, and Pico do Areeiro sees occasional winter snow; the north coast is wetter and greener. Check live conditions before committing to a coast.
