Where to stay in Porto Santo

Come for the beach and the switch-off: nine kilometres of soft golden sand, warm shallow water, and a pace that makes Madeira feel hectic. Two nights minimum to justify the crossing; summer needs booking ahead.

Getting there and around

The Lobo Marinho ferry takes about 2 hours 15 from Funchal, or a 25-minute flight. On the island, rent a scooter, buggy or bike; taxis cover the classics like Pico Castelo and the Columbus house museum.

Common questions about Porto Santo

Is Porto Santo worth visiting from Madeira?

If you have four or more Madeira days and miss proper sand, yes: it is a genuinely different island, drier and flatter, built around one of the best beaches in Portugal. As a day trip it is doable but rushed.

Why is the Porto Santo beach special?

Nine unbroken kilometres of fine carbonate sand with reputed therapeutic properties, shelving gently into calm, clear water that runs warmer than Madeira's. Locals bury their joints in the hot sand on purpose.

Did Christopher Columbus live on Porto Santo?

Yes: he married Filipa Moniz, daughter of the island's first captain, and lived here in the early 1480s. The house associated with him in Vila Baleira is now a small museum.
